A job as recruiter: no day is the same
Recruitment: it’s a job in which you have to be outgoing, proactive and most of all flexible. It’s definitely not for everyone. But finding that perfect match between a company and a candidate is such an addictive feeling!
Recruitment consultant Jonas has been working at AUSY for about a year. How did he end up here, what has he learned in the past year and why does he love his job so much? He will gladly tell you!
What made you decide to start working for AUSY?
“I already had some experience as a recruiter in the temporary employment sector”, Jonas tells us. “But my gut told me that consultancy would be more my thing. So I started looking for another job. I had some interviews at AUSY as well as a few other companies, and then I had to make a decision… I picked AUSY because of their personal touch and the wide range of trainings that they offer.”
“Of course every company claims to offer many trainings and to have a personal touch when it comes to their employees”, Jonas continues. “But from my first interview at AUSY onwards, I felt that they really meant it. And now, a year later, I can tell you with great certainty that they do!”
“Even in this strange time with a lot of working from home, I can always go to my colleagues if something is bothering me. Getting started from home and not being able to go to the office isn’t easy, and still I feel that I’ve really found my place in the team.”
What does typical day look like in your job?
“A typical day? There’s no such thing!”, Jonas laughs. “Every day is different, as a recruiter you have to be extremely flexible. But I try my best to add some structure to my days when I can.”
“In the morning, my team starts with a stand-up: we discuss the previous day, our priorities for that day and the most important vacancies and tasks for the coming hours. After this stand-up, I start sorting through the incoming applications. Once I’ve done that, I proactively look for candidates and I try to make some time to do my administration.”
“That’s the ideal situation”, Jonas continues, “because in reality, I have to adapt my schedule multiple times a day and set the right priorities. Sometimes I just get so many applications that it takes me all day to sort through them.”
“In our team we work in pairs. I have 1 colleague that’s always my back-up and I am theirs. This works great because you always have someone to consult with and you can alternate the work.”
“One week, I work for the freelancers. Those are my busiest weeks. The other week I work for the employees. During these weeks, I am occupied with proactively searching for candidates, making salary proposals and conducting interviews.”
Which characteristics do you need as a recruiter?
Jonas: “You definitely have to be outgoing. But here’s the good news: that’s something you can learn! Right after I graduated, I was very introverted. But by gaining experience, I learned to get out of my comfort zone. Now I know: that person I’m talking to is also human. And if someone acts unpleasant or maybe even rude, I don’t let it get to me.”
“You also need some analytical skills”, Jonas continues. “You have to be able to analyze resumes and decide which candidates are suited for the job and which aren’t.”
“And finally, you have to be able to trust your gut. Sometimes you see a candidate that has the perfect resume, but your intuition tells you that that person wouldn’t be right for the company. In that moment, you have to be brave enough to make the right decision. But believe me: when a starter lets you know that you helped them find their dream job, every hard decision you had to make was worth it! ;-)”
Do you have any tips for starting recruiters?
“Recruitment is a function that lets you grow within your company”, says Jonas. “You’re given the possibility to extend your network and gain contacts for the future, so you should take that chance with both hands.”
“What’s more, you’ll learn a lot about the sector in which you are active. Right now I’m working in the IT sector. By talking to my candidates, team lead, account managers … I am getting to know this sector through and through.”
“It’s of course important to show interest. There’s not a day that goes by in which I don’t take the time to look up this one specific program a candidate was talking about or google that one term I didn’t know yet. All this knowledge will be useful if I want to grow into the position of team lead or account manager in a few years!”
